Clay, Jackson and Platte counties mapAs interest in light rail and transit has increased and transportation costs rise, elected officials in Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri have started planning how to increase public transportation in the Kansas City metro area.

Many residents say that a regional transit system is important, and we need to make it happen.

How it got moving

In 2006, the Missouri General Assembly passed legislation that would allow Missouri counties in the Kansas City region to put together a ballot proposal that could fund transit with up to a 1/2-cent sales tax.

Following a transit summit on May 30, 2008 — hosted by Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Mark Funkhouser, Raytown Mayor David Bower and Riverside Mayor Kathy Rose — elected leaders began developing a proposal for multimodal regional transit service that would connect Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri. Who are the partners?

This is an exciting opportunity to plan enhanced transit service that meets the needs of individual cities, truly connects our region, and gives residents sustainable travel choices.

Several committees were created to study costs, routes and modes, governance and public involvement. The goal is ultimately to present a proposal to voters in all three counties. No date has been agreed upon yet.

Is the proposal related to Smart Moves?

Yes, the proposal will reflect Smart Moves, metropolitan Kansas City's vision for expanded and enhanced regional transit services, originally developed in 2002. It will be a big step toward putting more Smart Moves elements on the ground.
